Tony's Pizza, Thrashers Fries, and chocolate-dipped soft serve ice cream at the Oshin, hon!

didgereedoo

yay, we aren't killing eachother!

Tony's Pizza !!

Looked sorta like this
They said it couldn't be done. They said it was crazy! But we proved them wrong, didn't we, preciousssss? Yes we did, we did. My crazy yearly jaunt to Ocean City and back on the 4th of July all in one day once again was an unequivocal success. There was NO TRAFFIC on the way there OR the way back, how money is that! We parked way down at the far end of the boardwalk, 76th Street, where the beach wasn't crowded and there were actually parking spots (one parking lot at the single-digit roads was charging $80 for parking!!) Then we frolicked in the sun and sand for 6 hours, where I started a new book (Survivor, by Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club), got a bit of a tan (you are soo not supposed to do that any more! P.S. WARNING: DO NOT do a google image search for 'melanoma'!!) packed up, drove down to 15th St. and miraculously found a parking spot there. Then down to the boardwalk for a giant Tony's Pizza which we took to the beach and ate while waiting for the fireworks, sitting in our self-constructed beach-couch (dig a trench, pushing all of the sand into a mountain behind the trench. Cover with a blanket, sit in the trench with your back on the mountain, and its as comfortable as watching fireworks from your living room!)

The fireworks blew, unfortunately, due to low lying clouds which swallowed them whole as they launched into the mist. But everything else was fantastic! The weird thing is, I don't consider myself especially patriotic, but everytime I go and they sing that token 4th of July song--
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
etc, no matter how bad the rendition is, I always get ever-so-slightly choked up. How corny of me.

Nostalgic song of the day: Free, by the Soup Dragons
I heard this on the way to work today, totally reminding me of seeing them perform this song at the very first HFStival when I was, I dunno, 14 or something! In a giant field in VA. No worries, no responsibilities, free, with my whole bright future ahead of me to mangle irreparably. haha.

Cuz I'm Free, to do what I want, any old tiiiime
Love me, hold me
Love me, hold me
'Cause I'm free

i get choked up too! but then again, i can get all emotional over a freakin hallmark commercial haha.

such a shame that just because we arent right-wing, NRA-lovin, gay-hatin, wearin flag shorts on our fat asses, honky-tonk, back woods lunatics that we aren't patriotic. thats messed up. why does the right have a hold on patriotism? how come the only way to "support" our troops is to put a yellow ribbon magnet on our mini-vans and justify everything that Bush did with this disgusting war and post 9-11 rhetoric?!?!

"Hicks" and "right-wing, NRA-lovin, gay-hatin, wearin flag shorts on our fat asses, honky-tonk, back woods lunatics" are such unfortunate descriptions that pigeon-hole people. You might as well say, "watermelon-slurping, fried-chicken eating, welfare-collecting jigaboo."

I dislike most country music, for example, but I respect the rights of others to listen to it and enjoy it. Or another example, I have no moral problem with eating meat, but respect the choices of others to be vegetarians.

There seems to be a lack of tolerance and respect for differing viewpoints in both directions - right to left, left to right. I don't understand why each "side" thinks their intolerances are acceptable.

werd to that.

oh, and conservatives aren't so bad.

Darktortoise,

Isn't that a bit like saying, 'I have no moral problem with slavery, but I respect the choices of others who choose not to be slave owners. And they should respect my choice to own slaves'

'Tolerance' should only be extended to those whose opinions and choices don't harm others.

Sam Adams was not only a patriot but a founding father. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

I guess I should have known I'd hit a "hot button" there about being vegetarian.

The debate about the moral implications of eating other critters has been pretty well established in vast numbers of words presented by both sides of the issue. I doubt I could come up with any justification for that hasn't already been presented by someone else and rejected by you. It's likely the case in reverse as well. Perhaps I'm simply morally immature and the good example you and others with your views will bring me around in time.

Spider Girl that wasn't a good analogy and the views of conservatives don't hurt or disenfranchise others. Darktortoise is not say that there should be tolerance of everything and anything in this world especially views and practices that hurt others. What he was implying was that he doesn't like the steriotype that all conservatives are NRA-lovin, gay-hatin, back woods lunatics and what he would like to see is tolerance of views on both sides of the political spectrum.
The institution of slavery, which was a deplorable and embarrassing time in American history, represented an infringment upon "the unalienable rights endowed the their creator. Among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (property)." It was also a contradiction of another line in the Declaration of Independence: "We Hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal..."

Read my latest blog entry and you'll see how the views of the most iconoclastic liberals in the United States are hurting Americans in ten states in favor of big government. Tolerance of opionions that harm others. You decide.

Wow I just read about George Washington Carver, ex-slave turned chemurgist. Read this fascinating article about him, which features a photo of him smoking a hookah.

P.S. Shwagon, regarding 'unalienable rights endowed by their creator' ... don't all mammals have the same creator? So why do we exclude some from these inalienable rights? Because it conveniences us to make arbitrary exclusions, 'us' and 'them', the same as we did during slavery. Then it was because we wanted free labor, so we pretended that blacks were somehow 'less' then us, justifying the suffering we inflicted upon them. In this case its because we like the way their bodies taste, so we pretend that their suffering is somehow less important then ours, and close our eyes and minds to the horrors of modern day factory farms.

Peanut butter is goooood. Especially on a banana.
Thanks, George Washington Carver!

I'm not discrediting the horrors of factory farms. Yes, these practices exist. Yes, practices need to be reformed. And the practices are either being changed or will changed in the near future. This push is not coming from the government, it's coming from the market, as it should. Notice all the organic options that now exist in supermarkets today. Everything from free-ranging organic beef to organic tv dinners. This is a perfect example of how the free market not big government should dictate change.

Now lets get back to the real issue:

You didn't address my retort on tolerance of views from both sides of the political spectrum. You've steared the conversation to address the animal rights issue and in the process have placed the institution of slavery on the same level to the atrocious conditions that animals are subjected to in factory farms. I sure that black community would find that insulting.

The Declaration of Independence freed Americans from the usurpations of an intolerant government. It does not apply to animals.

And in my opionion (and you know what think about opinions), no, animals are not afforded those kind of rights. I guess that's we come to a disagreement.

But we can agree that Peanut Butter is good and it is good on bananas.

no, i did. and it was really really gross. especially the picture of the eye ball.

1. You say "animals are not afforded those kind of rights"
...Since when are humans not animals?

2. Regardless of whether or not there are documents or laws written to protect other species of animals (or other races of humans, or other sexes), the fact remains that when we act out of “a spirit of kindness and clemency” toward our fellow creatures, we exhibit the best elements of human character. You don't need to equate other species of animals with humans to agree that mercy over those who are weaker and less than equal to us is just the sort of quality that we use to explain humans superiority over other types of animals, and an honorable way to live.

3. I did address the point about tolerance of others' political views-- I'll repeat it. Tolerance of others' views and opinions, including political views and opinions, is important but should only be extended to those whose opinions and choices don't harm others.

I hate patriotism. It's nothing more than prejudice against people from other countries. And Samuel Adams was not a patriot -- he was a traitor who supported the violent overthrow of the government.

As someone who has spent much of his life working on factory farm issues, I can assure you that the free market is not improving things. They're getting worse. The only way for the free market to start having an impact anyway is for you, the consumer, to stop buying products from cruel farms. But even if the free market were effective, the government would still have to step in, because there will always be bad people who just don't care who will keep torturing animals unless something's done about it.

(By the way, unless you've read the book Animal Liberation, the chances are you don't really know the arguments for vegetarianism. Almost no one ever really talks about it, perhaps because it doesn't fit in a soundbite.)

By the way, "organic" means pesticide-free, not cruelty-free.

I can't beleive you didn't invite me to that restaruant. I live 10 min away! What's good there?

That *is* the quote of a traitor. It could, word for word, have been said by the Rosenbergs, executed as traitors against the US for helping communist USSR. The point is, when the your country is right, support it. When it is wrong, fight against it. Our founding fathers were all traitors -- and should be proud of the fact.

The alternative to patriotism is not parasitism. It is giving to all, not just to a select few, whether that be your race, your ethnic group, or your country. Do what's good, regardless of whether that places you with or against your country. Pride for one's accomplishments is worthy -- racial, national, or any other tribalist pride is usually (but not always) a euphemism for prejudice against those different from you.

(As for Mr. Goat, have you read Animal Liberation? The videos do not make the deeper case. Since you are unlikely to pick up the book, you might try reading THIS instead, though it is from a philosophy text and therefore a cerebral read.)
